An Moons graduated in 2000 at the department of Communication Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) with a thesis entitled: ‘Shining in the Shade. A sociological research on the meaning of Belgian designer fashion: the Handsome-case’.

Between 2001 and 2008 she worked as a teaching assistant within the field of media and culture at the same department. She is a member of the research institute IBBT/SMIT (Studies on Media, Information and Telecommunication) and the cluster Cultuurlab and she is associated to the research center CEMESO (Centre for studies on Media and Culture).

Her research interests include topics such as of cultural industries, cultural entrepreneurship and management, cultural policy and (fashion) design. She now prepares a PhD entitled: ‘Cultural industries undressed. Towards a qualitative cultural economic evaluation and policy framework concerning cultural industries in Flanders: a critical and prospective analysis by means of the constituting processes and impact indicators of the Flemish designer fashion industry.’

Since September 2008 she also works as a lecturer at the department of Cultural Studies (pre-master program ‘The Business of Culture’) of the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (EUR) where she teaches the course ‘Cultural industries: trends and strategies’.

Besides she is working as a part-time advisor of the provincial governor of culture in Limburg, in particular with regard to policy concerning visual and applied arts, audiovisual arts and performing arts.
