On December 14 2007 the Flemish Government has approved support for the research and development project BOM-VL (Bewaring en Ontsluiting van Multimedia in Vlaanderen or Archiving and Distribution of Multimedia in Flanders) for 2008-2009. The project aims at digitising and disclosing valuable audiovisual and cultural heritage in Flanders.

Promulgated by Minister Patricia Ceysens’ cabinet of Economy, Innovation and Sciences, the Flemish Government will support a consortium of partners of the Flemish audiovisual and cultural sector, and IBBT research groups.

For the first time in Flanders there will be a large scale crosssectoral and multidisciplinary project which will analyse the problems of preservation and distribution of audiovisual and cultural multimedia and which will propose sustainable solutions. The combination of a multidisciplinary research team and a large representation of the cultural and audiovisual sector can guarantee the relevance and applicability of the project outcomes.

SMIT will participate in the work packages concerning the user needs and the potential distribution models for audiovisual and cultural multimedia heritage.
