Museums and the Web: it is all about being on top of things

SMIT sends out its researchers to all corners of the world to provide knowledge and even more important to receive relevant feedback on this knowledge. Therefore Joke Beyl is taking part in the ‘Museums and the Web’ conference in Montréal together with 650 other participants. Yesterday, on April 10th, she gave a presentation entitled ‘On-line Heritage Presentation in Flanders: A New Way of Searching and Presenting Heritage Content’ during the Mobile computing session. The room was well filled and heard her speak about the concerns and views international and Flemish heritage professionals hold regarding on the one hand the creation of a common metadata layer on top of existing Flemish heritage databases and on the other hand the presentation of a heritage story by means of a mobile device. Bart De Nil, project leader and working at FARO (the Flemish institute for cultural heritage), introduced the Heritage 2.0 research project. Joke then went on focusing on the outcomes of the expert study. At the end of the session several participants took the opportunity to talk to Joke and Bart about these findings. This is also our main impression of the conference. Cultural institutions are very eager to find out how they can be on top of things.
